Network news Wednesday night presented a number of Democratic officeholders pledging to “resist” and “continue the fight” after the election victory of President-elect Trump and GOP congressional candidates.
Self-righteous postures as if anti-Hitler heroes in 1930s Germany. VP Harris adopted the same posture in her final campaign statement. Fight for what? The vague platform and anti-Trump accusations she offered in closing days of her campaign?
As I said yesterday, the job now is to rebuild and refocus a Democratic Party which has gotten out of touch with ordinary Americans and routinely demonized opposition candidates and voters.
A new Congress arrives in January. What will Democrats’ principal proposals be on national security, economic growth and employment, federal debt reduction, and immigration? How will they respond to Administration initiatives? Will there be a Democratic search for any common ground or uniform resistance to all things Trump and Republican?
The American people badly want an end to political anger and polarization. They should be able to look to Democrats for common sense and positive initiatives. Which Democrats will lead and what will they offer? The big question for a party which received public repudiation Tuesday.
